MR. NATHANIEL LAMAR MARSHALL's Obituary
Nathaniel Lamar Marshall entered this world on September 5, 1970 as the second child to Velma Earline Marshall and David C. Stewart, Sr. in Detroit, Michigan.
A lifelong Detroiter, Nate attended Finney and Osborne High Schools where he excelled in track. In 1995 he met the love of his life, Jerome Griffith, who remained his life partner until he preceded him in death.
Nate was something of a local celebrity bartender who was beloved by everyone. He had a passion for both mixology and people. He served cocktails and advice to many. He had customers who would follow him wherever he worked, just to "kick it" with their favorite bartender. He was a great cook and anyone who ever had his food was sure to gain a favorite dish.
Nate also participated in private celebrity parties as a bartender. Many bars in the city of Detroit know his name. He was known for being a bartender therapist, and was easy to talk to, especially if you were tipping.
He ran and operated Bottoms Up, Tom’s Oyster Bar, Captains, The Zoo Bar, Jimmy’s, Mandee’s, Sweetwater, and Townhouse. He also tended bar at many of the Chene Park events and Wednesday Jazz Nights.
Nate loved his immediate and extended family, and generously hosted many gatherings at his home. He entertained for special occasions of all kinds and the food and drink was plentiful. Nate had a witty sense of humor and a sharp tongue, and had his own way to provide constructive criticism and no-nonsense advice.
To know Nate is to know that his favorite artist is everything Aretha Franklin. She was an inspiration to him and was the one artist whom he could mimic the sound of to the tee.
This beloved man is survived by brothers Anthony Marshall and Dwayne Stewart, sisters Samara Marshall, Pam Burrel, Candi Stewart, Joyce Rankin, Darlene Shanks, as well as his honorary dad, Dr. Edward “Bunny” Roberts and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his life partner and parents, Nate joins his predeceased siblings, David Stewart, Jr., Kathy Stewart, Maurice Stewart, and Sharone Stewart.
