I met Pastor William Love on my first day of work at Boys Hope Girls Hope of Detroit on September 13th, 2013. Pastor Love was a God-fearing man, he was kind, respected, loved, and admired by the scholars, coworkers, and the entire administrative staff team. One day in 2013, Pastor Love and I sat at a table and discussed how important it was for Detroit youth to understand and celebrate the power, richness, and beauty of the African American culture and the obstacles we can overcome as productive members of society. Pastor Love decided at that moment that we couldn't expect something to happen without doing something, Pastor Love and I organized our very first "Festival of Hope" celebration in our residential home in February 2013 where maybe 30 people attended. Today what began as a conversation has grown each year into a major event of celebration and awareness where all cultures are celebrated. The celebration is organized by our young people, for our communities. Today, well over 100 people attend each year including scholars and coworkers from other cities and states. Pastor Love moved on from Boys Hope Girls Hope but would come back every year in February to celebrate what he was instrumental in creating. At our "Festival of Hope," this year in 2020 Pastor Love expressed pride in his creation as he prayed over our meal. Festival of Hope in February 2021 and beyond will continue to recognize Pastor Love and will be held in his honor.
Pastor Love, God has taken you home to rest in his arms but here on earth, "Festival of Hope" will remain a part of your legacy for many years to come. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, strength, and the love of God with us, we are heartbroken. Our Boys Hope Girls Hope family will love and remember you always!
Our deepest sympathy to the family, you are in our prayers.
With Love!
